Foreign Treatment
   
This page defines the terms and conditions for receiving medical treatment from foreign specialists either within Malawi or abroad. This coverage is only available under the VIP scheme.
   In Malawi
To be eligible, members must comply with the following terms and conditions:  
  • Have been under the eligible scheme for a period of not less than twelve consecutive months prior to the time of application
  • Have been referred by a General Practitioner or Specialist
  • Must apply for a Letter of Guarantee from the Society prior to treatment
  • Shall bear 50% of the total treatment cost and any shortfall after the limit has been exhausted and shall pay direct to the Visiting Foreign Medical Specialist
  • Must complete and send to the Society a claim form and attach to it original receipts/invoices within three months from the date of treatment
    NB: Failure to comply with the above terms and conditions may result in rejection of claims.
   Outside Malawi
This benefit is available to members who require Specialist Medical Treatment which is unavailable in Malawi. It is essential that members strictly adhere to all of the following terms and conditions.   
 
  • Be a Malawi citizen or resident
  • Have been under the scheme for a period of not less than twelve consecutive months prior to the time of application
  • Have been paying the monthly contributions in full during the past twelve consecutive months
  • Must have been referred by a Local Government Specialist
  • Must obtain and submit to the Society an estimate of the treatment costs from the providers of Healthcare services abroad before departure
  • Must apply to the Society for Specialist Foreign Medical Treatment and attach to the application form the referral letter and the estimate
  • Must pay a deposit in cash to the Society as advised
  • Must collect a Letter of Guarantee from the Society before departure
  • Shall bear 50% of the specialist foreign medical treatment cost and any shortfall after the limit has been exhausted
  • Ensure that original statements, invoices, receipts, and claim forms are submitted to the Society within four months from the date of treatment
   Exclusions on Foreign Medical Treatment 
The following foreign treatment benefits are excluded: 
  • Medical treatment or services received in countries outside the Southern African Development Community (SADC)
  • Cost of prescription drugs
  • Dental costs
  • maternity costs
  • Miscellaneous expenses of non medical nature (e.g. telephones, hire of TV, sales tax and labour charges, bank charges, airfares, funeral services, guardian fees, hotel accommodation)
